Product Terminology Guide

Alright then, let’s define some terms we use to describe the product to help you follow along.


Ick-tionary

The ick-tionary is the database of words and phrases Ick scans for — it’s the thing that makes our product super unique. We won’t include an update every time we change something in the database (that would be super boring), but with each major release, we’ll share a summary of how many words are in the database.


Editor

This is where you add your copy! You can type or paste your text into the Ick editor, and you’ll see words and phrases highlighted as you type. The text editor is plain text-only, so there’s no formatting. This creates a distraction-free space to edit and improve your content, while keeping it ready to copy and paste wherever it needs to go next.


Menu

The menu holds Ick’s main controls, including modes, account settings, and actions like copying to your clipboard or downloading. It’s collapsible, so you can create more space for your text. You can also toggle modes on and off without expanding the menu.


Edit Modes

Edit modes, or simply ‘modes,’ are special effects you can apply to the editor to match your preferences. Developed with input from writers with dyslexia and ADHD, these modes are designed to create a more comfortable and enjoyable writing space. You can also stack them, enabling multiple modes at once.

Modes include:

  • Lightbox
    This mode highlights only the text entry box, allowing you to concentrate on the words without distractions from the app.

  • Dyslexia-friendly
    This mode increases the spacing between letters and words while reducing stark whites in the editor.

  • Serif Switch
    This mode aids those who prefer writing and editing in a serif font or who wish to switch their font.

  • Night Owl
    This mode is our unique take on a dark mode experience.


Feedback Panel

The feedback panel (on the right-hand-side) will populate when you click a highlighted word.


Ick Categories

The app highlights words or phrases as you type or paste in content. Each flagged word or phrase falls into one of three categories:

⚐ Jargon

Overcomplicated or technical language.

What qualifies as jargon depends on where you work, but the worst offenders are usually technical or corporate speak. Jargon often gets lost in translation, alienating your audience or making your message harder to understand. There’s almost always a simpler, more direct way to say what you mean.

⚐ Unoriginal

Clichés or buzzwords that lack impact.

Words and phrases come in and out of fashion. But using trendy terms in your copy can dilute the impact of what you’re saying. ick helps you catch buzzwords in the act, so you don’t sound like just another brand ‘disrupting’ or ‘future-proofing’.

⚐ Overstated

Exaggerations that feel unconvincing or empty.

These are your hype words, meant to grab attention and spark excitement – but they rarely add value unless clearly defined or backed up with evidence. This category helps you spot exaggerated claims that might need a reality check.
